It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Professor Bhupat M. Desai on February 12, 2024, in Ahmedabad. Professor Desai had a long-standing relationship with the institute, starting from the early years of IIMA in 1969-74 as a Research Associate/Staff in the Centre of Management in Agriculture, and later as a Faculty Member from February 1975 to September 2000. Throughout his tenure at IIMA, Professor Desai made significant contributions through his teaching, research, publications in prestigious journals, case studies, books, and seminars, related with agricultural issues. A list of 67 cases and teaching notes he authored or co-authored between 1975 and 2000 is available on this link. He was also the author of several books such as Banking Credit for Farm Inputs Marketing (1996) and Rural Financial Institutions (1993). It is challenging to summarize Professor Desai's vast academic legacy at IIMA and in the country as a whole due to his extensive career. However, in this month's document, we have included some snippets on his early days at the institute, his doctoral studies at Cornell University, his appointment as a faculty member in 1975, some details of the courses he taught, and his retirement in 2000. Even after his retirement, Professor Desai remained active in the academic community. A Research & Publications report from April 2014 - March 2015 highlights his continued contributions, including a chapter on agricultural policy strategy in 2015 in an edited volume titled "Economic Growth and its Distribution in India." Prof. Bhupat Desai had been diagnosed with a progressive neurocognitive disorder some years ago and had been bedridden for the last few years. He was lovingly cared for by his daughter, a nurse and an attendant. He is survived by his son Mrinal and daughter Renu. To honor his life, his daughter Dr. Renu and former faculty member Professor T.V. Rao have shared their brief tributes with us, which have been included in the document. Once upon a time, the Centre for Management in Agriculture (CMA) at IIMA had three Desai's: Dhirajlal K Desai (1924-2016), Gunvant M Desai (1933-2010) and Bhupat M Desai (1938-2024). With the passing away of Professor Bhupat M. Desai, the last of the CMA '3D' has left us. |
