It's convocation season and you can find out a lot about previous convocations on the convocations archival page. This month's archival spotlight is on Ms. Madhabi Puri Buch, IIMA Alumna from the Class of 1988. Madhabi Buch's student yearbook-entry wellwishers in 1988 commented on her I-Schol status and pointed out that she was the only woman of her batch to pull out of placement and "We hope she finds just the job she is looking for, good luck, Mad!" Thirty six years later, in 2024, Ms. Madhabi Puri Buch who recently made history by becoming the first woman chairperson to lead Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) returns to her alma mater as the Chief Guest of the Convocation. Incidentally, when she graduated at the 23rd Convocation of IIMA, held on 1st April, 1988, Dr. Kamla Chowdhry, one of the pioneering female management educators in the world was honored with an honorary doctorate. As Chief Guest of that convocation, Verghese Kurien gave a famous speech at that convocation calling management schools as "training schools for shampoo salesmen" and recommended students a life of care, integrity and service. In sync with the spirit of that speech, Ms. Madhabi Buch began her career as a social worker for Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) for Grass Root Cooperatives from 1988 to 1989, after securing an undergraduate degree in Mathematics from St. Stephens and postgraduate degree from IIMA. She then transitioned to a Finance Analyst role at ICICI Bank from 1989 to 1992, followed by a position as a Lecturer at West Cheshire College in the United Kingdom from 1993 to 1995. Ms.Madhabi also served as a Market Research Consultant with ORG-MARG for a year, held various roles at ICICI Bank for 12 years from 1997 to 2009, eventually rising to the position of Executive Director. She then served as the CEO of ICICI Securities from 2009 to 2011 and as the Head of the Singapore office of the Private Equity Firm Greater Pacific Capital from 2011 to 2013. In 2016, Ms. Madhabi acted as a Consultant to the New Development Bank (NDB) in Shanghai. She also served as a non-executive director on the Boards of various companies and as a Whole Time Member of SEBI from 2017 to 2021 before assuming her current role as Chairperson of SEBI in March 2022. As the featured document of the month, we have curated a collection of snippets and photographs highlighting Ms. Madhabi.
