In June 1874, The East India Company (EIC), which began its life in England in 1600, was formally dissolved. Everyone has heard about the EIC in history books. But did you know that it still exists today as a luxury retail brand? And that it is owned by an Indian businessman, Sanjiv Mehta, who was once a participant of IIMA's executive education programme in 1984? Marking 150 years of the EIC dissolution, this month's archival snippet puts the spotlight on Sanjiv Mehta based on an interview conducted with him by IIMA Archives. As document of the month, we present this interview outlining his recollection of IIMA days, his love for history, the status of the EIC between 1874 and 2024 and his motive and passion to buy and own the EIC in 2003-05. And he stresses "If I had my MBA, I would not have bought The Company!" |
