Professor Madabhushi Raghavachari (1936-2024) was a distinguished statistician and academic leader who obtained his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1965. He served as a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) from 1966 to 1987 in the Production & Quantitative Methods area. Professor Raghavachari passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on September 19, 2024. He had a longstanding relationship with IIMA, joining as an Assistant Professor on June 30, 1966. He later took a two-year leave to work as a visiting professor at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in the USA from September 1967 before returning to IIMA. During his tenure at IIMA, Professor Raghavachari made significant contributions through his teaching, research, publications in prestigious journals, case studies, books, and seminars. He also held various administrative roles, including Area Chair of Production & Quantitative Methods, Chair of the Fellow Programme in Management, Dean (Planning), and Chairman's nominee to BoG, IIMA. He was actively involved in committees such as Policy and Planning, Research and Publication, Admissions and Financial Aid, FDC, and Faculty & Staff Evaluation. Professor Raghavachari also took a special interest in organizing alumni activities in the USA in 1986 and served as a member of the Board of "Friends of IIMA" (FIIMA). Summarizing Professor Raghavachari's extensive academic legacy is a challenging task due to his illustrious career. In this month's document, we have provided glimpses of his time at the institute, highlighting his academic and administrative contributions through various archival sources. Even after his departure from the institute in 1987, Professor Raghavachari maintained his connection by organizing conferences, serving on the editorial board of Vikalpa, and remaining active in the academic community. Archival documents pertaining to these activities have also been included. In a tribute to his father's life, Mr. Mukund Raghavachari shared insights into Professor Raghavachari's deep connection to the institute and provided details about his life at IIMA and beyond. Following his tenure in Ahmedabad, Professor Raghavachari went on to teach at the Wharton School of Business and later at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he retired as Professor Emeritus. Prof. Madabhushi Raghavachari is survived by a loving family, including his wife Ramani, daughter Vindya, son Mukund and 5 grandchildren. |
