Professor Santosh Kumar Bhattacharyya worked in the Finance and Accounting Area from 17th June 1964 to 2nd August 1981.

He retired from the Institute to establish his own consultancy firm, Management Structure and Systems in Mumbai.

A graduate of St Xavier's College in Kolkata, Prof. Bhattacharyya received his BSc degree in 1946 before moving to Kolkata's City College where he studied Commerce. He then obtained his ACA qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India between 1947 and 1950.

Prof. Bhattacharyya worked for various government and private concerns between 1950 and 1964 before becoming a Fellow of the Corporation of Secretaries-a PhD equivalent. On the completion of his studies, Prof. Bhattacharyya joined IIMA. For a brief period between 1969 and 1970, he was Visiting Professor at the Harvard Business School. Subsequently, he became a Consulting Associate with McKinsey & Co in New York.

Prof. Bhattacharyya occupied a number of administrative positions during his long academic career. He was a member of both the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi and the Indian Council of World Affairs. He was also a member of the National Productivity Council Team.

Prof. Bhattacharyya co-authored the National Productivity Council Report on Cost Accounting and Financial Control. He also had to his name several published articles and papers. These include, Organization of a Leading Firm of Public Accountants in the US, Implementation Problems of Management Control Systems and Determinants of Effective Working Capital Management: A Discriminant Analysis Approach.

Prof. Bhattacharyya held the IFCI Chair of Management at the Institute where he functioned in the capacity of a management consultant to several large public and private sector companies in India. These enterprises covered diverse areas such as banking, engineering, mining, marketing, textiles, telecommunications, transportation etc. He served on several government committees and functioned in areas of bank finance, capital issue control and management audit.

Prof. Bhattacharyya was highly respected by his students for his meticulous approach and commitment to achieving academic excellence. As a consultant, he offered insights on complex organizational issues. He has left behind a rich legacy of professional achievements. Prof. Bhattacharyya passed away at the age of 66 after an operation which proved to be fatal.
