Professor Manu R Shroff worked in the Public System Group from 1st June 1982 to 16th June 1986 and later played a key role in drafting India's economic policies.

Prof. Shroff was born in Jambusar, Bharuch. He graduated from the University of Mumbai. He later joined the London School of Economics to pursue his B.Sc.

Prof. Shroff gave up academics to work with the Finance Ministry. Here, he rose to become Assistant Finance Secretary. He was an Advisor to the Planning Commission. He was also Banking Secretary and a member of the Finance Commission. Prof. Shroff was also Editor of the Economic Times from 1984 to 1989. He served on a number of policy making bodies and committees of national importance. He was a Member of the Tenth Finance Commission and Chairman of the State Public Finance Reform Committee of Government of Gujarat.

He was admired for his ease with which he successfully straddled the worlds of public administration and academia. He made a substantial contribution to teaching and research activities at IIMA. He bought new insights into the curriculum and gave a major thrust to the research activities of the Institute. He had high intellectual capability coupled with humility. Prof. Shroff was also a voracious reader. He was often found reading The Economist.

Prof. Manu R Shroff passed away after battling lung cancer at the age of 76 and was survived by his wife, Rashmiben and two sons, Gautam and Gaurang.
