John I Reynolds (Business Policy)

Professor John I Reynolds worked in the Business Policy Area from December 1964 to July 1966.

He graduated from Princeton in 1943. During WW II, he served as a Supply Officer in the United States Navy in the Pacific theatre. Upon his return to civilian life, he earned his masters in Business from Harvard University in1948 and, later, he earned his Doctorate from Harvard in 1963.

A native of Toledo Ohio, Professor Reynolds began his business career in the Franklin Ice Cream Company. He was President of the company in 1964 when the business was sold, and his career path turned to academics.

Upon completion of his Doctorate from Harvard, Prof Reynolds had experience in teaching through case studies. Specifically, he brought Written Analysis of Case Studies (WAC) to India and gathered case studies from Indian industry to use as examples for this form of teaching. This experience was very valuable to his next assignment to the Indian Institute of Management. He was there at the behest of the Ford Foundation, which gave him a grant to travel to India to mentor the faculty in how to bring this new case method of teaching to the fledgling University.

Upon his return to the United States, Professor Reynolds took a faculty position at Harvard University Business School for six years. In 1972, when the Uganda Management Institute was being founded in Kampala, he spent three years teaching Business Administration and mentoring the faculty in teaching strategies.

In 1975 he joined the faculty of Texas A&M University Business School and retired as Professor Emeritus in 1986. During his tenure at Texas A&M, he travelled throughout the world teaching seminars and classes in England, Scotland, Greece, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Mexico, Morocco, Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Jamaica, Singapore and Switzerland.

His publications include Indian American Joint Ventures: Business Policy Relationships (1979) and Case Method in Management Development: Guide for Effective Use International Labour Office (1980).

Prof. Reynolds succumbed to Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia at the age of 69 and was survived by his wife, Sarah Reynolds and five children: Rebecca Zielinski, Will Reynolds, Craig Reynolds, Carissa Enright and Aleta Crawford.
