The founders of the Institute had undertaken to raise the originally estimated Rs. 30 lakhs for buildings. Gautam Sarabhai, Chairperson of NID at that time, writes that with the area increasing, the cost would be Rs. 81 lakhs, but that Kasturbhai Lalbhai had asked the first phase to be limited to Rs. 25-30 lakh.
